The decision could streamline federal permitting, a longtime goal of Republican lawmakers and former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"880\">The case focused on an <strong data-start=\"488\" data-end=\"507\">88-mile railway<\/strong> designed to transport waxy crude oil from Utah\u2019s Uinta Basin. Environmental groups argued the government failed to consider broader impacts, such as the environmental harm caused by <strong data-start=\"690\" data-end=\"731\">increased oil production and refining<\/strong>. However, the Court sided with the federal agency, the <strong data-start=\"787\" data-end=\"819\">Surface Transportation Board<\/strong>, which limited its review to transportation-related impacts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"882\" data-end=\"1254\">Justice <strong data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"909\">Brett Kavanaugh<\/strong>, writing the unanimous opinion, emphasized that NEPA is meant to be a <strong data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1004\">procedural safeguard<\/strong>, not a tool to halt development. Congress recently changed NEPA to cap many reviews at <strong data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"1906\">150 pages<\/strong>, further reducing their complexity and length.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"2244\">Environmental groups, like <strong data-start=\"1982\" data-end=\"1998\">Earthjustice<\/strong>, warn the ruling sets a dangerous precedent.
