In an interview with <em data-start=\"261\" data-end=\"278\">PEOPLE Magazine<\/em>, the 68-year-old journalist described the frightening symptoms he experienced, including <strong data-start=\"368\" data-end=\"413\">full-body aches, uncontrollable shivering<\/strong>, and severe fatigue during a live broadcast. Initially thinking it was the flu, Roberts became concerned when his <strong data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"586\">bloodwork revealed low white blood cells and platelets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"980\">Following his rheumatologist\u2019s advice, Roberts went to the ER, where doctors diagnosed him with malaria. Though he tried to remain light-hearted, joking about his tendency for dramatic situations, Roberts admitted he was <strong data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"831\">\u201ca little scared\u201d<\/strong> due to the disease\u2019s potentially deadly consequences. \u201cI have never felt that sick in my life,\u201d he said, emphasizing the severity of his experience.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1333\">Roberts believes he contracted malaria while vacationing in <strong data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1055\">Indonesia<\/strong> earlier in August. Despite not remembering a mosquito bite, symptoms emerged about <strong data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1167\">10 days after his return<\/strong>. Malaria is common in tropical regions and can cause fever, chills, muscle pain, and digestive issues. Left untreated, it can lead to serious complications or death.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1335\" data-end=\"1698\">During hospitalization, Roberts was treated with <strong data-start=\"1384\" data-end=\"1401\">IV artesunate<\/strong>, the U.S. standard for severe malaria. He described ongoing symptoms like <strong data-start=\"1476\" data-end=\"1503\">wild temperature swings<\/strong>, intense sweating, and deep fatigue. On August 27, he described it as a \u201cdown day,\u201d reflecting the fluctuating and grueling recovery process. He is expected to return to work on <strong data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1697\">September 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1700\" data-end=\"1970\">Roberts thanked colleague <strong data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"1745\">Trace Gallagher<\/strong> for filling in during his absence and acknowledged the care provided by <strong data-start=\"1818\" data-end=\"1834\">Inova Health<\/strong>, noting that even his doctors had rarely encountered a malaria case.
