This follows his legal team&#8217;s claims that he fears persecution in over <strong data-start=\"413\" data-end=\"429\">20 countries<\/strong>, including El Salvador and Uganda.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"859\">Abrego Garcia, originally from <strong data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"512\">El Salvador<\/strong>, was previously deported in March but re-entered the U.S. illegally in June. He is currently on trial for <strong data-start=\"619\" data-end=\"660\">transporting undocumented individuals<\/strong> during a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee. DHS initially designated <strong data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"737\">Uganda<\/strong> as his removal destination, but a judge temporarily blocked the deportation after his lawyers cited fears of persecution.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"1159\">In a removal notice obtained by <strong data-start=\"893\" data-end=\"905\">Fox News<\/strong>, ICE officials noted the unusually broad nature of Abrego Garcia\u2019s persecution claims, questioning their credibility. \u201cHomie is afraid of the entire western hemisphere,\u201d DHS posted on its official <strong data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1118\">X (Twitter)<\/strong> account, alongside a copy of the letter.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1528\"><strong data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1204\">Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem<\/strong> labeled Abrego Garcia a <strong data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1248\">member of MS-13<\/strong>, calling him a \u201chuman trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator.\u201d However, his lawyer, <strong data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1365\">Chris Newman<\/strong>, denied all accusations and accused the Trump administration of <strong data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1464\">weaponizing the justice system<\/strong> to force a guilty plea in exchange for safer deportation terms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1530\" data-end=\"1866\">According to court documents, the <strong data-start=\"1564\" data-end=\"1586\">Justice Department<\/strong> allegedly offered a plea deal that included deportation to <strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1660\">Costa Rica<\/strong>, where Abrego would face no prison time and receive residency or refugee status. After he rejected the plea, ICE informed his legal team that deportation would proceed to Uganda\u2014unless he changed his mind.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1868\" data-end=\"2121\">His attorney, <strong data-start=\"1882\" data-end=\"1897\">Sean Hecker<\/strong>, claimed this amounted to coercion, accusing federal agencies of using their power to pressure Abrego into giving up his constitutional rights.
