Someone taped a straw to my locker with \u201c<strong>BARN PRINCESS<\/strong>\u201d scrawled across it. Everyone knew my family ran a dairy farm, and they treated me like I\u2019d stepped out of a cartoon. Before school, I\u2019d scrub my boots in the gas station sink, trying to wash off the smell of manure. It never worked.<\/p>\n<p>It started freshman year. I\u2019d miss morning practice to help with calves and show up smelling like iodine. Once, a girl named Meilin wrinkled her nose and said, \u201cCan\u2019t you shower before school?\u201d loud enough for everyone to laugh. Still, I didn\u2019t hate the farm. I loved it \u2014 the rhythm of milking before sunrise, the quiet of dawn, the first breath of a newborn calf. Dad always said, \u201cWhen your feet are on soil, your head\u2019s clearer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I tried to shrink myself. Wore perfume. Avoided talking about home. No matter what I did, I was always \u201ccow girl.\u201d Then came <strong>Spirit Week<\/strong> senior year \u2014 \u201cDress As Your Future Self.\u201d Everyone else showed up as doctors and CEOs. I came as me: clean jeans, boots, and Dad\u2019s hat. People stared. I didn\u2019t flinch.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon, my ag teacher, <strong>Mr. Carrillo<\/strong>, handed me a flyer for an FFA public speaking contest \u2014 topic: <em>The Future of Farming.<\/em> \u201cYou could win this,\u201d he said. I signed up.<\/p>\n<p>I practiced in the barn, cows for an audience. My speech began, \u201cI\u2019m seventeen, I\u2019ve delivered six calves and treated pink eye, and I wouldn\u2019t trade it for anything.\u201d I won regionals. Then state.<\/p>\n<p>A few months later, I was invited to <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, to speak on agricultural education. Same boots, new confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Now I\u2019m studying ag business on a scholarship.
