Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Lopez said many of his constituents welcomed the federal assistance, in stark contrast to the positions taken by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Both Democratic leaders have criticized the deployment, accusing the Trump administration of \u201cdeclaring war\u201d on Chicago.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbsolutely not,\u201d Lopez said when asked if residents in his ward shared those concerns. \u201cThere are many people in the city of Chicago who completely support having the additional resources to keep both ICE agents and community protesters safe.\u201d He stressed that the need for law and order was being ignored by city and state leaders, who he claimed were putting politics ahead of public safety.<\/p>\n
Lopez further accused Mayor Johnson and Governor Pritzker of failing to take responsibility during a time of growing unrest. \u201cWe have seen a complete abdication of responsibility,\u201d Lopez said. \u201cThey have refused to allow police to maintain order for protesters and ICE agents doing their job.\u201d<\/p>\n
The call for federal intervention comes after weeks of escalating violence outside a federal immigration facility in Broadview, Illinois. Demonstrators have repeatedly clashed with federal agents, damaged government vehicles, and blocked deportation operations. A particularly violent episode occurred when a convoy of vehicles intentionally rammed federal agents, prompting a federal response.<\/p>\n
While a federal judge temporarily blocked Trump\u2019s order to send 300 Texas National Guard troops, hundreds of officers from ICE and Customs and Border Protection have already been deployed. Despite backlash from top Democrats, Lopez insisted most Chicagoans support efforts to restore peace and order.<\/p>\n
