A lighthearted moment between U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney went viral Monday during the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, when Trump mistakenly referred to Carney as \u201cPresident.\u201d The summit, attended by over two dozen world leaders, was held to finalize a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas and was largely serious in tone.<\/p>\n
During his speech, Trump praised Canada\u2019s involvement in the summit, saying, \u201cThe President called… he knew the importance,\u201d before asking, \u201cWhere\u2019s Canada, by the way?\u201d After the event, Carney jokingly thanked Trump for the \u201cpromotion,\u201d to which Trump replied, \u201cAt least I didn\u2019t call you a governor,\u201d prompting laughter from those nearby.<\/p>\n
Despite the exchange, tensions between Trump and Carney have existed for months. Trump has previously proposed that Canada become the 51st U.S. state and threatened to charge the country $61 billion to join the U.S. \u201cGolden Dome\u201d missile defense system unless it gave up sovereignty. In a May social media post, Trump claimed Canada could join the system for free if it became a U.S. state.<\/p>\n
Carney firmly rejected Trump\u2019s offer, stating that Canada \u201cwon\u2019t be for sale, ever.\u201d King Charles III, Canada\u2019s constitutional monarch, echoed that sentiment in a speech to the Canadian Parliament, declaring that Canadians must remain true to their values and independence in the face of foreign pressure.<\/p>\n
Despite political friction, Canada is still engaged in discussions about joining Golden Dome. However, Carney\u2019s office has made it clear that any agreement must protect Canadian sovereignty while pursuing shared security goals with the United States.<\/p>\n
