House Passes GOP-Backed SAVE Act to Require Proof of Citizenship for Voting<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Republican-led U.S. House passed the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in a 220\u2013208 vote, aiming to require proof of citizenship to register for federal elections. The bill, backed by Donald Trump and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), would also remove noncitizens from voter rolls. While polls show broad support for voter ID laws, 208 Democrats opposed the measure, arguing there’s no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting.<\/p>\n
