Trump, posting on Truth Social, said Musk had become a \u201ctrain wreck\u201d in recent weeks and called his proposal to create a third party, the \u201cAmerica Party,\u201d misguided. \u201cThey have never succeeded in the United States,\u201d Trump said, warning that it would only create confusion in a two-party system.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters on his way back to Washington, D.C., Trump dismissed the idea entirely. \u201cWe\u2019ve had tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats have lost their way, but a third party is ridiculous,\u201d he said. However, tensions began to rise when Musk slammed Trump\u2019s \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill,\u201d calling it a \u201cdisgusting abomination.\u201d Musk then vowed to back primary challengers against any Republicans who supported the legislation\u2014though it passed with broad GOP backing.<\/p>\n
Trump claimed Musk\u2019s change of heart stemmed from the bill\u2019s elimination of electric vehicle tax credits, a move Musk had once supported but later opposed as Tesla\u2019s sales declined. Trump also cited his decision to withdraw the nomination of SpaceX astronaut Jared Isaacman to lead NASA, pointing to Isaacman\u2019s close ties to Musk and prior donations to Democrats.<\/p>\n
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also weighed in, saying that while Musk\u2019s government reform efforts had been well received, his political ambitions were less welcome. \u201cThe boards of his companies likely want him back full-time,\u201d Bessent said.
