FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino recently announced a potential breakthrough in the long-stalled investigation into the January 6, 2021, pipe bomb case. Speaking on \u201cFox & Friends,\u201d Bongino said the bureau is \u201cclosing in on some suspects\u201d tied to the placement of two pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters just as protests erupted at the U.S. Capitol. This marks the most significant update in the four-year probe, which many believed had gone cold during the Biden administration.<\/p>\n
The suspect, captured on surveillance footage, wore a gray hoodie, Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers, a face mask, and gloves. The FBI previously revealed that the individual placed the bombs more than 16 hours before they were discovered. One was found behind the RNC headquarters by a local resident, triggering an urgent search that uncovered the second bomb near the DNC.<\/p>\n
A Department of Homeland Security report confirmed both bombs were viable and could have caused serious harm. Though they had one-hour timers, the devices were discovered too late to detonate. Notably, then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi were at one point within feet of one of the devices, raising concerns about a potential catastrophe.<\/p>\n
Critics, including some of Donald Trump\u2019s supporters, have questioned the timing and transparency of the investigation, accusing the FBI of covering up details. Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and vocal critic of past FBI leadership, previously claimed the incident may have been an inside job.<\/p>\n
