Vice President JD Vance is calling on Republicans to aggressively counter Democratic redistricting and census strategies, which he argues unfairly boost Democrat representation in Congress. In a Fox Business interview, Vance stressed that GOP-controlled state legislatures must stop being passive and take decisive steps to restore fairness to the electoral system.
The conversation comes as Texas considers redistricting plans that could flip Democrat-held seats, including that of Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Vance and other Republicans are also pushing to exclude illegal immigrants from census counts used for House apportionment. He argued that including non-citizens skews representation, giving blue states extra seats in Congress despite those individuals not having voting rights.
Vance criticized the current system as “ridiculously unfair,” emphasizing that it allows states like California, Illinois, and New York to maintain disproportionate power through “absurd gerrymanders.” He cited California as a prime example, where Republicans make up roughly 40% of the vote but hold only 9 of 52 congressional seats.
He urged Republicans to mirror Democratic redistricting strategies to level the playing field. Vance claimed that Democrats have already maximized their gerrymandering potential in liberal states, meaning Republicans now have an opportunity to reclaim ground without risk of further Democratic advantage.
Grassroots conservatives have rallied behind Vance’s stance. Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk called the strategy necessary, saying that removing illegal immigrants from apportionment could decisively weaken Democratic influence. Commentator Eric Daugherty also declared that Democrats are now facing increasing political setbacks.
With control of Congress often hinging on a small number of seats, Vance’s warning is clear: unless Republicans act decisively, Democratic control could become entrenched for years. He called on his party to meet Democratic political aggression with equal intensity to ensure a more balanced and representative government.
