Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly presented peace terms to President Donald Trump that include Ukraine withdrawing from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. According to Axios, sources briefed on the discussions revealed that Trump now plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, and he’s pushing for a trilateral summit with both Zelensky and Putin as early as next Friday.
Trump has extended invitations to European leaders to join the upcoming meeting with Zelensky, and some have agreed to attend. On the flight back to Washington, Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff briefed key European and NATO leaders on Putin’s position. Putin proposed freezing military lines in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in exchange for full Ukrainian withdrawal from Donetsk and Luhansk.
While Putin framed halting advances in the latter regions as a concession, reports indicate that Russia has made little progress in those areas recently. Despite that, the offer is being treated seriously, given its inclusion of potential peace terms and broader security discussions.
As part of the evolving negotiations, Putin reportedly accepted U.S.-led “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine, which Trump’s envoy likened to an Article 5-style commitment. According to CNN, Putin also agreed to legally binding assurances that Russia would not expand further into Ukraine or Europe as part of the peace framework.
In a symbolic gesture, First Lady Melania Trump wrote a heartfelt letter to President Putin that was personally delivered by President Trump at the Alaska summit. The letter urged Putin to protect future generations and embrace peace, emphasizing the shared dreams of children across the world.
Melania’s message called on Putin to restore peace and dignity, stating that protecting innocence is a responsibility that transcends political borders. She ended the letter with a powerful appeal: “It is time.”
