A peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine appears to be within reach following a summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a U.S. Air Force base in Alaska. According to Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy, the emerging deal involves Russia gaining control of parts of eastern Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees for Ukraine from the West.
The proposed plan would see Russia take full control of the Donbas region — which includes Donetsk and Luhansk — while freezing military activity in other contested areas like Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Trump reportedly supports this arrangement and has encouraged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to consider it, according to a European diplomat cited by Fox News.
Zelenskyy, however, has historically resisted any land concessions to Russia, calling them unconstitutional. While Russia already controls nearly all of Luhansk and most of Donetsk, Ukraine still holds around 30% of Donetsk and remains reluctant to give it up. Zelenskyy argues that conceding the region could leave Ukraine open to further Russian aggression.
Despite these concerns, Trump has moved away from advocating for a temporary ceasefire and now favors a full peace agreement. Putin also supports a permanent resolution over a short-term truce, saying he seeks a long-term arrangement that satisfies Russian interests.
Zelenskyy responded on Sunday by stating that negotiations cannot proceed until a ceasefire is in place. He made the comments during a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who plans to join him in Washington for further talks with Trump.
European leaders have expressed general support for Trump’s peace efforts but stopped short of endorsing a final deal. After a conference call with Trump, they praised his push to end the war and stop the bloodshed, while avoiding specifics about their preferred path to peace.
