Former President Donald Trump appeared alongside law enforcement officers and National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night, highlighting the results of his federal-led crime crackdown in the city. He praised the operation’s impact on public safety, claiming it has transformed the capital into a safer, more vibrant place.
Trump pointed to a recent stretch without homicides as evidence of success. “The numbers are down like we wouldn’t believe,” he said, citing what he described as “incredible results.” The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed D.C. had gone over a week without a murder, coinciding with the increased federal presence.
Posting to Truth Social, Trump accused Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser of manipulating crime statistics and warned of a potential full federal takeover of the city if she didn’t stop. “Washington, D.C. is SAFE AGAIN!” he wrote, calling the city’s revitalization a sign of returning order and community strength.
During remarks to assembled police and Guard personnel, Trump emphasized his long-term commitment to restoring order in the capital. “We want to make this absolutely perfect,” he said, promising continued security efforts and expanded cleanup and infrastructure projects, including fixing roads, removing graffiti, and rebuilding parks.
Trump first deployed 800 National Guard troops on August 11 as part of the initiative. Additional forces from six other states have since joined the mission. Trump’s appearance Thursday followed an earlier interview in which he announced his plan to join law enforcement on patrol to show his support.
Vice President JD Vance had visited Guard units the previous day, commending their work around Union Station. Vance condemned the area’s decline due to homelessness, addiction, and mental illness, arguing the Guard’s presence was key to restoring safety and dignity in the nation’s capital.
