Efforts by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and some Democrats to impeach former President Donald Trump have hit a dead end, with key Democrats dismissing the idea. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) told Fox News that renewed impeachment efforts are “not going anywhere,” noting that Trump has already been impeached twice. Fetterman warned that loosely invoking impeachment only weakens its constitutional seriousness.
Fetterman’s remarks were a direct response to Ocasio-Cortez’s suggestion of renewed impeachment talks, which he and others view as politically unhelpful. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the gravity of impeachment and criticized attempts to use it as a routine political tool.
Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez faces ethics troubles of her own stemming from her appearance at the 2021 Met Gala. The House Ethics Committee found she violated House gift rules by accepting over $3,700 in goods and services, including her “Tax the Rich” dress, accessories, and a ticket for her boyfriend, Riley Roberts. Despite eventually paying less than $1,000 for everything, many vendors were only compensated after months of delay and repeated collection efforts.
The committee report detailed how her former campaign staff, particularly ex-campaign manager Rebecca Rodriguez, tried to lower costs and delay payments. Some invoices went unpaid for nearly six months, and there were even threats of legal action before vendors were compensated.
While the committee did not find evidence that Ocasio-Cortez intentionally tried to underpay, it criticized her staff’s handling of the situation and concluded she broke House rules. As a resolution, the panel requested she pay an additional $2,733.28 and make a $250 donation to cover her boyfriend’s event dinner.
The committee stated the matter would be closed once the payments were made, avoiding formal sanctions but still marking a clear violation of congressional ethics standards.
