A tragic shooting occurred at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during the first week of classes. Governor Tim Walz confirmed the incident, stating he was briefed and that the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and State Patrol were on site. Walz expressed his sorrow, calling it a “horrific act of violence,” and offered prayers for the students and staff affected.
Authorities responded swiftly to the scene, with multiple agencies including the FBI, Minneapolis Police, and Minnesota State Patrol involved. According to police, the shooter has been contained and is now confirmed to be deceased, though official victim counts have not yet been released. Witness reports mentioned as many as 50 shots were fired.
The shooter, described as a man dressed in black and armed with a rifle, reportedly targeted children in Pre-K through eighth grade. The attack occurred around 8:15 a.m., during the school’s regular Mass. Families were directed to 525 West 54th Street for reunification, and residents were urged to avoid the area between Lyndale and Nicollet Avenues.
Footage from the scene showed emotional parents escorting children away as emergency personnel flooded the area. Residents told Fox 9 that the initial sound of gunfire was mistaken for construction noise. The Minneapolis Police Department reassured the public there was no active threat, but emphasized staying away to let responders work.
National leaders also responded. President Donald Trump said he had been fully briefed and praised the FBI’s quick action, while DHS Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the agency is monitoring the situation. Both officials offered prayers for the victims and their families.
The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, stated that emergency teams were activated and that he was coordinating closely with police. Updates will be shared as more verified information becomes available.
