Local leaders in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district in Queens, New York City, are urging FBI Director Kash Patel to take stronger action against violent foreign gangs that are forcing women into prostitution and selling drugs. These leaders describe the ongoing situation as a “festering scourge” and have organized several rallies in recent weeks to draw attention to known brothels operating openly in the neighborhood.
The targeted area, near Roosevelt Avenue, has long been plagued by crime, prostitution, and gang activity. Despite NYPD crackdowns, the strip remains a “red-light district.” Protesters report women soliciting sex on sidewalks while customers quickly enter nearby buildings. Police have detained 350 people this year for prostitution-related crimes in the area.
Many of the brothels are disguised businesses, such as bodegas or massage parlors. At a recent protest, community members posted “Shut it down” signs outside these locations, demanding immediate federal intervention. The Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, which promotes safety and better living conditions, has renewed its appeal to the FBI for a thorough investigation and enforcement action.
A previous letter sent by the group in April led to the arrest of eight suspected members of the 18th Street gang, accused of violent crimes to control the area. While the coalition welcomed the arrests, they insist that a broader federal effort using racketeering and trafficking laws is needed to dismantle entrenched criminal networks.
According to the group, the strip is now controlled by multiple gangs, including Tren de Aragua and Chinese criminal organizations. They allege these groups are involved in human trafficking and immigration fraud, contributing to an unsafe environment for families and children.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has requested over \$500,000 in federal funds for nonprofits aiding victims of sex trafficking. Rep. Grace Meng is also pushing for federal resources to help the NYPD combat crime along Roosevelt Avenue.
