Former Vice President Kamala Harris is now receiving protection from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) after former President Donald Trump revoked her Secret Service detail, according to a FOX 11 report. As many as 14 officers from LAPD’s elite Metro Division have been reassigned to protect Harris at her Brentwood home, where she lives with her husband, Doug Emhoff.
Trump signed an order ending Harris’ Secret Service protection as of September 1, despite President Biden having extended it for a full year before leaving office. Typically, former vice presidents are only entitled to six months of protection, which would have ended on July 21. Local Democratic leaders have called Trump’s move political retaliation.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized the decision, calling it an act of “revenge” and warning that it puts Harris at risk. She stated she would work with Governor Gavin Newsom to ensure Harris remains protected. The California Highway Patrol has also reportedly offered security assistance, though Newsom’s office declined to confirm details.
This is part of a broader trend, as Trump has also ended taxpayer-funded security for several high-profile figures, including members of the Biden family, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and former Cabinet officials. Critics argue this signals a pattern of politically motivated retribution.
Meanwhile, speculation continues about Harris’ political future. While she has ruled out a 2026 run for California governor, she may be keeping her options open for a presidential run in 2028. However, Democratic strategist James Carville downplayed her chances, stating that the party is eager to move on from anyone associated with the 2024 campaign.
Carville’s comments reflect broader Democratic sentiment, with many wanting both Biden and Harris to step aside. Still, names like Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Gavin Newsom remain in the conversation for the 2028 Democratic nomination.
