Ocasio-Cortez Blames Guns For Assassination of Charlie Kirk

In the wake of the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) criticized gun laws and Republican resistance to reform. Speaking to reporters, she stressed the need for action over rhetoric, emphasizing that Americans expect lawmakers to address gun violence. AOC pointed to ongoing deaths from firearms and highlighted congressional inaction as a central issue contributing to tragedies like Kirk’s assassination.

Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and a well-known conservative activist, was shot at approximately 12:20 p.m. during a student-hosted event at Utah Valley University. According to university official Ellen Treanor, the shooter fired from a building roughly 200 yards away. Kirk was quickly evacuated by his security team, but the attack proved fatal. The campus was closed for the day, and while initial suspects were taken into custody, all were later released.

Video footage shows Kirk moments before the shooting, responding to a question about transgender mass shooters. His final comments before being shot referenced gang violence and mass shooting statistics. A single gunshot is heard, followed by Kirk recoiling in his seat, bleeding heavily. The shocking nature of the video added urgency to public and political reactions.

The FBI initially detained two individuals following the shooting but later released both due to lack of evidence. As of the latest update, the shooter remains at large. FBI Director Kash Patel has been actively updating the public, while federal and local authorities continue their investigation.

The incident drew immediate responses from political figures across the spectrum. Former President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Senator Mike Lee called for prayers and condemned the violence. Trump described Kirk as a “great guy” and a victim of senseless violence.

Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania also condemned the attack, stating that political violence has no place in America and urging leaders to speak with moral clarity in such times of crisis.
