TMZ responds to ‘tone deaf laughter’ during Charlie Kirk death coverage

The global media has been closely covering the tragic killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. One outlet, TMZ, found itself at the center of controversy after laughter and applause were heard during its live stream covering the event. The incident sparked immediate outrage across social media, leading to widespread condemnation and demands for accountability.

Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University and later died from his injuries. As the news broke, TMZ anchors Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere reported on the assassination during a live stream. However, in the background, audible laughter and clapping created the impression that staff were reacting inappropriately to Kirk’s death.

Viewers were horrified. Many social media users accused TMZ of celebrating the killing of a husband and father. One X user wrote that employees were “cheering, clapping, and celebrating” just seconds before Kirk’s death was announced. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer called the behavior “shameful and disgusting.”

In response, TMZ swiftly issued an apology via video. Harvey Levin explained that the background noise was unrelated to the coverage of Kirk’s assassination. Instead, it came from another group of employees who were watching a live car chase in a separate part of the newsroom. He firmly stated that if anyone had actually been laughing at Kirk’s death, they would no longer be employed.

Charles Latibeaudiere added that while the timing was unfortunate and inappropriate, the reactions were completely disconnected from the tragic news being reported. They both acknowledged how upsetting the incident was and apologized for the confusion and distress caused.

TMZ later published a written apology clarifying the situation. While maintaining that the laughter was unrelated, the network admitted that watching a car chase during such a serious broadcast was “tone deaf.” They concluded by expressing regret for any offense caused during coverage of the tragic event.
