Just hours before his arrest, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson allegedly posted a message on Discord appearing to take responsibility for the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Investigators say these online conversations could be key evidence in the case. The post, reportedly sent to a group of friends, read: “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. I’m sorry for all of this.”
The incident occurred while Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University to a crowd of over 3,000. A single gunshot struck him, and he later died at the hospital. As the FBI launched a multijurisdictional manhunt, a crucial tip came not from surveillance or a witness, but from a Discord chat group. Authorities were alerted after someone close to Robinson contacted them, leading to his arrest about 33 hours later.
Messages exchanged in the group chat reportedly contained dark humor and apparent admissions. Users tagged Robinson with messages like “wya 💀” as the FBI circulated his image. One user wrote, “Tyler killed Charlie!!!” and Robinson, according to reports, did not deny the claim. Another message, referencing evidence, mentioned disposing of a “manifesto” and a weapon.
Before his arrest, the account believed to be Robinson’s posted a farewell-style message, suggesting he planned to turn himself in. Discord confirmed the content of the messages during its internal review but stated there was no indication the platform was used to plan the attack.
Robinson was taken into custody and has been charged with aggravated murder and other offenses. Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced that the state would seek the death penalty. Robinson, who grew up in a conservative household, has refused to cooperate with authorities.
While Robinson remains silent, investigators are piecing together the case using online records and testimonies from those around him.
