During a Thursday episode of The View, co-host Joy Behar made headlines by stating she agreed with former President Donald Trump’s criticism of James Comey. Behar, known for opposing Trump on most issues, said she disliked Comey’s decision to reopen the Hillary Clinton email investigation shortly before the 2016 election. She noted, “I agree with Trump on this one,” acknowledging rare alignment with the former president.
Shortly after Behar’s remarks, the Justice Department announced a grand jury had indicted Comey. The charges stem from his 2020 testimony before Congress, where he was questioned about the FBI’s handling of the Trump–Russia investigation. The inquiry into Comey’s conduct had intensified following statements from former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, suggesting Comey had approved the sharing of information with the media.
Comey had testified that he did not authorize any FBI official to speak anonymously to reporters. However, McCabe’s account contradicted that statement, leading to suspicions of false testimony. Prosecutors allege Comey misled Congress about both the sharing of sensitive information and the origins of the investigation, known internally as “Crossfire Hurricane.”
Following the indictment, Comey posted a video on Instagram maintaining his innocence and expressing confidence in the judicial system. He said he is “not afraid” and emphasized that standing up to political pressure has always come at a cost for him and his family. Comey reiterated his desire to face trial and clear his name.
Comey’s arraignment is scheduled for October 9 before U.S. District Judge Michael S. Nachmanoff. The case has drawn national attention due to Comey’s high-profile role in investigations during the 2016 election cycle.
FBI Director Kash Patel commended the professionalism of agents involved in the case, stating that the investigation was handled fairly and without political bias.
