Former President Donald Trump on Saturday publicly called on his Justice Department to prosecute political opponents, drawing sharp criticism for undermining the department’s tradition of independence. In a Truth Social post, Trump urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to act against Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and New York Attorney General Letitia James, whom he accused of serious misconduct.
Trump’s comments referenced allegations made by Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, claiming Schiff and James falsified mortgage documents. Although no official charges have been filed, Trump insisted there is a strong case and criticized delays in taking action, calling it a threat to the administration’s credibility and the rule of law.
In the post, Trump lashed out at a former federal prosecutor, Erik Siebert, who resigned from his role in the Eastern District of Virginia. Trump claimed he fired Siebert for failing to pursue charges, calling him a “Woke RINO” and accusing him of lying to the media. He also praised attorney Lindsey Halligan and said he would nominate her as U.S. Attorney for the district.
Trump also praised Bondi’s leadership as attorney general, saying she is “careful” and “smart,” but needs strong allies like Halligan to deliver justice. He blamed bipartisan political interference for blocking prosecutions and urged immediate legal action. “JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!” he wrote in all caps.
Bondi, for her part, recently stated that the “weaponization” of federal agencies has ended under Trump. She criticized the Biden administration for pursuing criminal cases against Trump, calling it the “ultimate weaponization” of government.
Trump’s renewed pressure on the Justice Department comes as he remains embroiled in legal battles, including a civil fraud judgment and multiple indictments, which he has repeatedly claimed are politically motivated.
