House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has strongly criticized the U.S. Supreme Court, accusing it of enabling former President Donald Trump to behave like a monarch. In an interview on CNN’s The Situation Room, Jeffries called the Court’s decisions “shameful,” arguing that they have given Trump excessive legal immunity and authority beyond what is appropriate in a democracy.
Jeffries focused on recent rulings that grant Trump broad presidential immunity, shielding him from legal consequences that would apply to ordinary citizens. He asserted that such decisions undermine the principle of checks and balances and defy the intentions of the Constitution’s framers, who deliberately sought to limit executive power and prevent authoritarian leadership.
The House Democratic leader also criticized Trump’s influence over the Department of Justice during his presidency. He argued that Trump’s actions weakened the DOJ’s independence and integrity, and he warned that the support of certain conservative Supreme Court justices only amplified the former president’s disregard for legal norms.
Although Trump continues to face multiple legal challenges, Jeffries maintained that real accountability remains elusive. He believes stronger action is needed from both Congress and the DOJ, and he advocated for reforms that would restore their independence and credibility. In his view, a Democratic-controlled Congress would be more effective in checking executive overreach.
Jeffries called for a broader reassessment of the Supreme Court’s role in shaping presidential power. He expressed concern that its recent decisions have undermined democratic safeguards and sent a dangerous message about presidential accountability.
Ultimately, Jeffries labeled the situation a “disaster” for American democracy. He urged lawmakers and the public to remain vigilant about the balance of power, warning that continued judicial leniency could further erode constitutional protections.
