Eric Dane hospitalized after a fall related to his ALS condition

Gray’s Anatomy star Eric Dane missed this year’s Emmys after suffering a fall linked to his ALS diagnosis. The actor, best known as Dr. McSteamy, was expected to join the cast for the show’s 20th anniversary but instead spent the night in the hospital getting stitches.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a rare and terminal neurodegenerative disease that leads to the gradual loss of motor control. Dane revealed his diagnosis in April 2025, calling it “a nasty disease” in an interview with The Washington Post.

Though disappointed to miss the event, Dane said there was nothing he could do. “It would have been great to see Jesse and the cast again,” he said, referring to co-star Jesse Williams, who presented an award on his behalf. Williams praised his friend, telling Entertainment Tonight, “He’s solid. The man’s just solid.”

Dane admitted he initially hesitated to go public with his diagnosis, fearing speculation. “It was getting increasingly difficult to hide what was going on,” he said. “But I’ve never experienced a bigger outpouring of love and support.”

Since announcing his condition, Dane has become an advocate for ALS awareness and research. In late September, he met with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., urging renewal of the ACT for ALS, a law supporting medical research into neurodegenerative diseases.

He has been open about the progression of his illness. “My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working,” he told Diane Sawyer in June. “It’s sobering.”

Despite the challenges, Dane remains focused on his work and family. “I’m grateful to have my loving family by my side,” he told People.

He added that he looks forward to returning to the set of Euphoria for its highly anticipated third season.
