Security personnel at Coast Guard Base Alameda opened fire on a U-Haul truck after the driver ignored commands and reversed toward officers. The vehicle was deemed a direct threat, prompting shots that wounded the driver and triggered an FBI-led investigation.”

Late Thursday night at around 10 p.m., U.S. Coast Guard security personnel opened fire on a U‑Haul truck as it reversed aggressively toward the entrance of Coast Guard Base Alameda in California. Prior to the shooting, officers say they issued multiple verbal commands for the driver to stop, but he defied them and accelerated in reverse directly toward their position.

Video from the scene shows the truck backing up onto a bridge leading to the base, its headlights glaring, just before officers discharged live rounds. According to the Coast Guard, the sudden maneuver constituted a direct threat to security personnel, prompting the defensive response.

The driver was struck in the stomach but survived and is currently being held for a mental health evaluation, according to the Department of Homeland Security. A bystander was also injured by bullet fragments, treated at a hospital, and later released.

The FBI has taken over the investigation, deploying its evidence response, crisis management, and bomb technician teams to the site. There were no reported injuries among Coast Guard personnel.

This violent confrontation occurred just hours after protests had erupted at the base over the planned deployment of over 100 federal immigration agents to the Bay Area. The base, located on Coast Guard Island, has become a focal point in that wider controversy.
