The U.S. Justice Department has announced an indictment of 14 people tied to a sophisticated, cross-border alien-smuggling ring. The case, handed down by a grand jury in Las Cruces, New Mexico, alleges the group conspired to transport, harbor, and smuggle undocumented migrants into the United States, using dangerous routes and hiding methods.

According to the DOJ, eight of the 14 defendants have already been arrested (on Feb 20–21, 2025).  The indictment claims the organization moved hundreds of undocumented people, including unaccompanied minors, through remote border locations in New Mexico and South Texas.

One of the most heartbreaking allegations: a migrant died of heat exposure in the desert and was allegedly abandoned by the smugglers during the operation.  The indictment also describes how the group used “stash houses” to conceal migrants during transit and coached them on evasive tactics — including how to flee from U.S. Border Patrol or avoid checkpoints.

High-speed driving was a key part of their strategy: the DOJ says the smugglers often tried to outrun law enforcement, putting both migrants and public safety at risk. Acting U.S. Attorney Holland S. Kastrin (District of New Mexico) condemned the group’s “callous and reckless disregard for human life,” while DOJ and DHS officials stressed the case reflects a coordinated effort to dismantle transnational smuggling networks.

ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), along with U.S. Border Patrol, played a central role in the probe. Jason T. Stevens, HSI’s El Paso Special Agent-in-Charge, warned that these types of smuggling operations treat people as “human cargo,” exploiting their desperation to make a profit.  The case is also part of “Joint Task Force Alpha,” an initiative pooling DOJ and DHS resources against major alien-smuggling operations.

Each of the 14 defendants faces conspiracy charges (transport, harboring, bringing in undocumented people). If convicted, they could spend up to 10 years in prison, though actual sentences will depend on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.  The DOJ says the investigation is ongoing — more arrests or charges could follow as authorities continue dismantling the wider smuggling network.
