FBI has issued an updated description of a person of interest in the Nancy Guthrie case and doubled the reward to encourage tips that could provide crucial information and aid the ongoing investigation.

The FBI’s Phoenix office recently updated the description of a person seen in doorbell camera footage linked to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, while increasing the reward for information leading to her recovery to $100,000. The individual is described as a man roughly 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build, carrying a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack, according to CNN. Authorities explained that the updated description is meant to focus public tips and reduce the overwhelming volume of unverified information received. Since early February, the FBI reported over 13,000 tips, while the Pima County Sheriff’s Department noted nearly 18,000 calls related to the case. Doubling the reward from $50,000 underscores the urgency of the investigation and the commitment of law enforcement to locating Guthrie and holding responsible parties accountable.

The case has drawn significant public attention, generating a mix of credible leads and speculative claims. Investigators noted that outreach from psychics, mystics, and clairvoyants, while well-intentioned, has complicated efforts to focus on actionable information. Nearly two weeks have passed since 84-year-old Guthrie was reported missing on February 1. Authorities hope the more detailed description of the man seen on video will help the public differentiate relevant sightings from unrelated activity, improving the chances of obtaining credible leads and reducing the spread of misleading tips.

Investigators are urging neighbors within a two-mile radius of Guthrie’s home to submit any doorbell or surveillance footage, particularly from January 11 between 9 p.m. and midnight and January 31 between 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Officials also asked residents to report any suspicious vehicles seen around 10 a.m. At least one unconfirmed tip involves a white van, though no details have been publicly confirmed. By focusing on local footage, authorities aim to narrow down potential suspects or witnesses while maintaining community engagement in the investigation.

In addition to digital evidence, law enforcement has recovered items that may provide forensic leads, including a glove reportedly found about a mile and a half from Guthrie’s residence. CNN analyst John Miller explained that investigators could examine the glove for fingerprints, DNA, hair, or fiber transfers, potentially linking it to an individual with a criminal record. While there is a possibility the glove is unrelated, its similarity to what was captured on video makes it a promising avenue. Combining surveillance, physical evidence, and forensic analysis reflects a comprehensive approach to solving high-profile missing person cases.

The investigation has also involved detaining and questioning individuals connected to the case, though not all leads have resulted in charges. One such person, 36-year-old Carlos Palazuelos, was briefly detained outside Tucson. Palazuelos told reporters he was initially unaware of the reason for his detention and learned it involved Nancy Guthrie only at the police station. He denied involvement, explaining he works for GLS and may have delivered a package to her home. Palazuelos described cooperating fully with authorities and emphasized his innocence. This illustrates the careful balance investigators must maintain between following leads and protecting the rights and reputations of those questioned.

The FBI continues to prioritize Nancy Guthrie’s safe recovery, with Public Affairs Officer Connor Hagan stressing the importance of actionable tips from the public. The combination of an updated suspect description, the increased $100,000 reward, and ongoing forensic and video analysis is designed to streamline the investigation and improve the chances of locating Guthrie. The case highlights the challenges of managing thousands of public tips, analyzing evidence, and maintaining accuracy while ensuring that innocent individuals are not implicated. By combining community involvement, traditional investigative work, and advanced forensic techniques, law enforcement aims to bring Guthrie home safely and hold those responsible accountable.
