Rep. LaMonica McIver, a Democrat from New Jersey, appeared in court Wednesday after being charged with assaulting ICE agents. She’s accused of shoving and grabbing officers during a protest at a Newark detention center.
Released on her own recognizance, McIver must surrender her firearms and cannot leave the country without approval. She faces up to eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
McIver called the charges political and racially motivated, claiming she was doing her job. Video evidence reportedly shows her striking agents. She is now fundraising off the indictment, while prosecutors defend the charges as necessary and non-political.
