Leaving a phone plugged in after it’s fully charged — known as “overcharging” — can gradually reduce battery performance over time.
But it’s not just the battery at risk. Constantly keeping a charger plugged into the wall, even when not in use, can waste electricity and may pose a fire hazard, especially if placed behind furniture or near flammable materials.
Safety concerns also extend to how and when we use our phones. Charging a phone while using it — particularly when wearing metal accessories — can be dangerous. One case involved a 13-year-old girl who suffered serious neck burns from an electric arc caused by a metal necklace while talking on a phone that was charging.
To stay safe:
-
Use original chargers.
-
Don’t cover your phone while it’s charging.
-
Avoid using your phone while it’s plugged in, especially with metal accessories.
-
Unplug chargers when not in use.
