My stepdaughter Hyacinth hadn’t spoken to me in over a year. Then out of nowhere, she invited me to dinner. I hoped it meant we were reconnecting — but the dinner was strange. She barely talked, ordered expensive food, and then disappeared before the bill came.
I thought I’d been used. But as I left, she appeared — holding balloons and a cake that read, “Congrats, Grandpa!”
She grinned and said, “You’re going to be a granddad.”
Turns out, it was all a setup for the surprise. She wanted me to know she cared and wanted me in her life — and the baby’s life.
We hugged, cried, and for the first time in years, I felt like we were truly family again.
