Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, former running mate to Kamala Harris in their 2024 loss to President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, called on his party to “get meaner” during a speech in South Carolina aimed at energizing Democrats.
“Maybe it’s time for us to be a little meaner, a little bit more fierce,” Walz said to applause, adding, “When it’s an adult like Donald Trump, you bully the s**t out of him back.”
He described Trump as “the existential threat we knew was coming,” and warned Democrats of difficult years ahead. Despite his call for toughness, Walz also urged Democrats to find joy again, saying, “Damnit, we should be able to have some fun and be joyful,” referencing the 2024 campaign with Harris.
Walz mocked Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” comparing it to something a fourth grader might say—then quickly added it would be an insult to his former students.
He praised Harris as “well-accomplished” and said he wished she were on TV instead of current leadership. His South Carolina stop is part of a national tour as he weighs a 2028 presidential run, though he’s expected to seek a third term as governor first.
Walz’s visit comes as Minnesota lawmakers finalize the state budget. Despite speculation, he has made no formal announcement regarding a 2028 bid.
The South Carolina Democratic Party welcomed him warmly, and Rep. Jim Clyburn invited him to speak at the state convention and his annual fish fry.
