Serial killer fears rise as three dozen bodies are found in a lake

Fears of a serial killer have intensified in Austin, Texas, following the discovery of 38 bodies in and around Lady Bird Lake over the past three years. While authorities maintain there is no evidence of a mass murderer, the clustering of cases—most involving men between the ages of 30 and 49—has fueled public speculation. Two cases have been officially ruled suicides, while many others remain under investigation, with causes of death ranging from drowning to drug overdoses, natural causes, and undetermined circumstances.

The most recent incident involves a teenager whose body was found after he disappeared while kayaking. Authorities believe he drowned after stepping off an unseen underwater shelf, with no foul play suspected. However, past cases raise concerns. One notable example is Jeff Jones, who visited Austin for a bachelor party and was later found in the lake with serious injuries and the date-rape drug Rohypnol in his system. Jones believes he was drugged and pushed into the water, echoing patterns seen in other cases—victims vanish at night, are found in water, and often have no signs of theft or assault. While police urge caution and continue to attribute most deaths to accidents or non-criminal causes, the consistent profile of victims and eerie circumstances keep suspicions of a serial predator alive in the public’s mind.
