Nearly three decades after Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997, former bodyguard Ken Wharfe reflects on three critical security failures that, in his view, sealed her fate. Wharfe, who served as Diana’s personal protection officer from 1987 to 1993, believes the key mistakes included the choice of driver, the mishandling of coordination with local authorities, and Diana’s decision to dismiss her royal security team. On the night of her death, Diana’s driver, Henri Paul, was under the influence of alcohol and drove at high speeds while trying to evade paparazzi. The high-speed chase ended when the car crashed into the thirteenth pillar of the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, killing Diana, Dodi Fayed, and Paul. Only Dodi’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived.
