Princess Diana’s Former Bodyguard Claims Three Key Errors Led to Her Death

Nearly three decades after Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997, former bodyguard Ken Wharfe reflects on three critical security failures that, in his view, sealed her fate. Wharfe, who served as Diana’s personal protection officer from 1987 to 1993, believes the key mistakes included the choice of driver, the mishandling of coordination with local authorities, and Diana’s decision to dismiss her royal security team. On the night of her death, Diana’s driver, Henri Paul, was under the influence of alcohol and drove at high speeds while trying to evade paparazzi. The high-speed chase ended when the car crashed into the thirteenth pillar of the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, killing Diana, Dodi Fayed, and Paul. Only Dodi’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived.

Wharfe argues that if Diana’s team had cooperated with local police and avoided relying on a drunken driver, the tragedy might have been averted. Additionally, Diana’s decision to relinquish her royal protection after her divorce from Prince Charles left her vulnerable. Despite Wharfe’s advice to retain the security team, she dismissed them just four weeks later. This left her without the resources or expertise needed for proper protection during high-risk situations. While debates and conspiracy theories continue to swirl around the circumstances of her death, Wharfe believes these preventable missteps directly contributed to the fatal outcome. As the world continues to mourn her loss and honor her legacy, many are left wondering how differently things might have turned out had those decisions been made differently.
