Democrats ‘Extended’ Hospitalization Causes Problems for House Dems

Rep. Donald Norcross (D-NJ) is hospitalized at Cooper University Hospital after suffering a serious medical emergency during a flight from Florida, which was diverted to North Carolina. Norcross, 66, was diagnosed with cholangitis, a gallbladder infection that progressed into sepsis. After successful removal of a gallstone, he remains in intensive care, responding well to treatment but facing a prolonged recovery with likely physical rehabilitation. His absence is notable given the Democratic Party’s thinning presence in the House, following the deaths of multiple members. His office remains operational, and Norcross is staying in contact with staff while recuperating.

The Democratic Party is under growing strain as Norcross joins a list of recent absences, including the deaths of Representatives Bill Pascrell, Sheila Jackson Lee, Sylvester Turner, and Raul Grijalva. These losses, combined with Norcross’s extended recovery, have weakened the party’s legislative influence. Republicans now hold a narrow 220-213 majority in the House, meaning Norcross’s absence could impact critical votes. Last week, his absence reportedly enabled Republicans to pass a controversial budget bill. With upcoming votes on health care and other major issues, Democrats are facing increased pressure to maintain unity and voting strength. Norcross’s timeline for return remains unclear, heightening concerns for party leadership as they navigate a pivotal legislative session. Politico and other outlets note that without Norcross’s vote, Democrats are at a further disadvantage in their already fragile House minority.
