He stuck his wife with the bill — I got revenge on her behalf

James and Rachel, a couple in their early thirties, were once the embodiment of true love. As a long-time server at Romano’s, I had seen countless love stories, but theirs stood out. They were regulars who dined at the same table every Friday without fail. James always ordered ribeye steak, and Rachel chose the grilled salmon. They shared a bottle of wine, a dessert, and always split the bill.

My co-workers and I admired their bond. It seemed effortless and genuine. But over time, small changes crept in. James began ordering the most expensive dishes and started handing the bill to Rachel. She appeared increasingly uncomfortable footing the growing expenses, especially during group dinners when their friends joined.

One evening, James arrived at Romano’s celebrating a business success with friends, but Rachel was noticeably absent. She arrived late, looking stressed, and quietly ordered only a salad. The atmosphere at the table was upbeat—except for Rachel, who seemed out of place and distant. When the bill arrived, James tried to pass it to her again, joking that she loved treating him.

Rachel’s forced smile and quiet protests showed her unease. After whispering to James that the bill was too high, she excused herself to the bathroom. Concerned, I followed and overheard her on the phone with her mother, saying she couldn’t afford the $873 bill. It was clear she was distressed and overwhelmed.

Seeing her in that state, I felt compelled to help. When she stepped out, I gently advised her to pretend there was a work emergency and leave. She agreed. Moments later, she acted out the scene and exited the restaurant, leaving James surprised.

I approached James and claimed a mix-up had occurred with their reservation. When he requested a different table, I informed him he would need to settle the bill first. His discomfort was obvious, especially in front of his business associates, who noticed his reaction.

The next day, Rachel returned to thank me. She had finally confronted James about his behavior. That Friday, for the first time in years, James and Rachel didn’t show up. Their absence left a quiet mark, hinting at a love that may have come to an end.
