The Senate is working to finalize President Donald Trump’s ambitious legislative package called the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (BBB), which combines sweeping tax cuts, increased border security funding, and significant spending cuts. Early Tuesday, Trump warned via social media that if the bill fails to pass, it would result in the largest tax increase in U.S. history — a 68% hike.
The BBB includes roughly $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, including making permanent several tax breaks passed early in Trump’s first term. It allocates $350 billion to bolster border and national security efforts, including funding for deportations. In addition, the bill proposes $1.2 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and food stamp programs, tightening eligibility requirements and reducing federal reimbursements to states.
Democrats have strongly opposed the bill, particularly criticizing the removal of billions in green energy tax credits. These rollbacks angered billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who relies heavily on subsidies for his companies like Tesla and SpaceX. Musk warned he would launch a new political party called the “America Party” if the BBB passes in its current form.
Senate Republicans are struggling to secure the slim majority needed to pass the bill. Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Rand Paul of Kentucky have voiced opposition, with Tillis deciding not to seek reelection after Trump threatened to back a primary challenger against him. Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated that GOP leaders are “figuring out how to get to the end game” amid a prolonged vote-a-rama session.
Musk has ramped up his criticism on social media, calling the spending insane and accusing the current parties of functioning as a “uniparty” that ignores the people’s voice. He emphasized the need for an alternative party that better represents Americans.
Trump addressed Musk’s complaints on Truth Social, reiterating his opposition to electric vehicle mandates. He highlighted the subsidies Musk receives, claiming they are crucial for his companies’ survival, suggesting that without government support Musk’s ventures would falter.
The vote-a-rama process, where senators submit numerous amendments, continues into late hours, reflecting the contentious nature of the bill. GOP leaders must hold together a fragile coalition, as losing more than three Republican votes would doom the package.
The bill’s future remains uncertain, with Democrats pushing amendments to block or weaken it, and Republicans determined to pass what Trump describes as “perhaps the greatest and most important” legislation of its kind.
