21-year-old congressional intern shot dead

Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old congressional intern, was tragically shot and killed in Washington D.C. He was a senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, majoring in finance with a minor in political science. Eric was interning in the office of Kansas Representative Ron Estes when the incident occurred near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Eric was an unintended victim in a drive-by shooting. Multiple suspects exited a vehicle and opened fire on a group of people, injuring three individuals, including Eric, a woman, and a 16-year-old boy. All were rushed to the hospital, but Eric succumbed to his injuries the following day, while the other two are expected to recover.

Representative Ron Estes and his wife expressed their condolences to Eric’s family, remembering his kindness and cheerful demeanor in the office. They praised his dedication and service to Kansas’ 4th District and the country. Their statement highlighted the loss felt by the community and their gratitude for Eric’s contributions.

Massachusetts Representative Richard Neal also issued a heartfelt statement, describing his heartbreak over the loss of the Granby-native. Neal emphasized Eric’s passion for public service and praised him as an exemplary student and community member. He extended his thoughts and prayers to Eric’s family, acknowledging the profound pain of losing a child.

The tragic shooting underscores the ongoing concerns over gun violence in the nation’s capital and the devastating impact it has on young lives pursuing their dreams. Eric’s untimely death is mourned by colleagues, friends, and public servants alike.
