CHIRLA and Political Reactions Amid Escalating Protests in Los Angeles
A recent report revealed that The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), a taxpayer-funded organization linked to the Democratic Party, organized a rally condemning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In 2023, CHIRLA received $34 million in government grants, primarily from California, and $450,000 from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for citizenship programs, though DHS later reduced this funding.
Despite evidence connecting CHIRLA to the events, the organization denies involvement in violent protests, stating its role was limited to a press conference and deploying legal observers. Another group, the Marxist Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), with reported financial ties to the Chinese Communist Party through billionaire Neville Singham, has also been involved in the protests.
Since June 7, 2025, protests against ICE arrests in Los Angeles have intensified into riots, prompting President Donald Trump to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to the city.
California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the federal intervention as “intentionally provocative” and asserted local authorities could request law enforcement support at any time. Newsom has repeatedly blamed the President for escalating tensions and called for restraint from federal authorities, emphasizing the protection of peaceful demonstrators and law enforcement personnel alike.
President Trump responded on Truth Social, accusing Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of failing to manage the riots and warning that the federal government would intervene if local officials could not restore order.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has declared Downtown Los Angeles an unlawful assembly zone amid fragmented protests, urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report criminal activity as officers work to disperse crowds.
