Her legs are amputated after using a common household product

Lauren Wasser was a 24-year-old model on the rise when her life changed dramatically in 2012. What began as a typical day ended in a medical crisis after she developed flu-like symptoms. She was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with menstrual toxic shock syndrome (mTSS), a rare but life-threatening illness linked to tampon use. Though she had used tampons correctly, toxins had entered her bloodstream, nearly killing her.

Lauren’s condition quickly worsened. She fell into a coma, suffered two heart attacks, and her body temperature soared dangerously. With her organs shutting down, doctors gave her only a one-percent chance of survival. Though she lived, the damage was severe—her right leg had to be amputated. Later, after seven years on one prosthetic, complications led to the loss of her left leg as well.

The emotional toll was immense. Lauren battled depression and even considered ending her life. What kept her going was the thought of her younger brother and the devastation he’d face. That realization became her turning point—she chose to fight, not only for herself but for others. She began advocating for menstrual product safety, pushing for greater transparency and education.

Lauren transformed her trauma into purpose. She cast her prosthetic legs in gold, symbolizing strength, and returned to modeling—this time as a bold symbol of resilience. She now runs, hikes, and lives without limits, redefining beauty on her own terms.

Her message is simple but powerful: know the risks, own your story, and never forget—you’re already enough.
