Here’s why you should always leave an upturned glass and a piece of paper in the sink before going on vacation

Before heading off on vacation, most people diligently check off a long list of tasks—unplugging appliances, securing valuables, and turning off the water. Yet, one commonly overlooked detail is the kitchen or bathroom sink. Ignoring it can lead to unpleasant consequences, such as bad odors, moisture buildup, or even insect infestations during your absence.

When a home is left vacant for days, especially in warmer months, plumbing systems can dry out due to lack of water flow. This allows sewer gases to seep through the drains and create musty smells indoors. The stagnant, damp environment also attracts pests like gnats, ants, or cockroaches, which can enter directly through the pipes.

Fortunately, a simple, cost-free hack recommended by professionals can help: place a paper towel over the sink drain and cover it with an upside-down glass. This quick trick acts as a barrier to odors, gases, and bugs. Unlike traditional sink stoppers that can shift or lose effectiveness, this setup remains secure without pressure or seal dependency.

To prep your sink before travel, follow a few easy steps. First, clean the sink thoroughly and pour hot white vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for a few hours, then rinse with warm water. Rub a lemon wedge around the drain to leave a fresh scent. Once dry, place the paper towel and upside-down glass as described.

You might wonder why not just use a regular stopper. While convenient, stoppers can warp from heat or shift over time. The inverted glass, however, is more reliable, low-maintenance, and doesn’t require a tight seal—making it a smarter solution for longer trips.

Returning to a clean, fresh-smelling home can make all the difference after a trip. That tiny effort of covering the sink ensures your welcome back is peaceful, odor-free, and exactly how you left it.
