The Surprising Mineral That Helps Fight Age Spots Naturally After 60

As people age, they often notice dark patches called age spots on sun-exposed areas like the face, hands, and shoulders. These spots result primarily from prolonged UV exposure and are more common in individuals over 60, though younger people with significant sun exposure may also develop them. Other contributing factors include genetics, aging skin, and environmental pollutants.

Age spots are caused by melanin buildup, the pigment responsible for skin color. With age and repeated sun exposure, the skin’s ability to regulate melanin decreases, resulting in uneven pigment clusters. While age spots are harmless, they’re often unwelcome signs of aging.

A promising natural remedy for preventing and reducing age spots is the trace mineral selenium. Though needed only in small amounts, selenium plays a vital role in protecting skin cells from oxidative damage, supporting elasticity, and boosting immune function. It acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals that accelerate aging and pigmentation.

Many adults, particularly seniors, don’t get enough selenium. Signs of deficiency include fatigue, poor wound healing, dry or sun-sensitive skin, and increasing pigmentation issues. As the skin naturally becomes thinner and more fragile with age, ensuring adequate selenium intake becomes increasingly important for maintaining a healthy complexion.

Selenium can be obtained from foods such as Brazil nuts, tuna, turkey, eggs, mushrooms, and whole grains. Just one Brazil nut can meet the daily selenium requirement of 55 micrograms. Supplements are also an option but should be used with caution, as excess selenium can lead to adverse effects like stomach upset and hair loss. A doctor can confirm deficiency with a simple test.

For optimal skin health, combine selenium-rich foods with other smart habits: daily sunscreen, protective clothing, hydration, a colorful diet, and avoiding smoking or excess alcohol. Aging skin can still look radiant—with the right nutrients and care.
