Indiana Plans ‘Speedway Slammer’ Detention Center Amid Immigration Crackdown
Indiana is preparing to open a new migrant detention facility dubbed the “Speedway Slammer,” modeled after Florida’s controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” center launched under the Trump administration. The proposed center aims to house up to 1,000 migrants awaiting deportation, Fox News reports.
The state is working closely with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to finalize the facility as part of ICE’s nationwide plan to increase detention capacity by 80,000 beds over the next year. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the partnership, praising Indiana Governor Mike Braun’s cooperation.
“Thanks to Governor Braun for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country,” Noem said. She urged undocumented immigrants to “avoid arrest and self-deport now” via the CBP Home App.
Strategically located, the Speedway Slammer will help detain undocumented immigrants apprehended in major urban areas like Chicago, which has become a hotspot in the ongoing migrant crisis under President Biden’s administration.
Governor Braun expressed pride in collaborating with federal officials. “Indiana is taking a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combating illegal immigration and will continue to lead the way among states,” he stated.
Funding for the center comes through the recently signed “Big, Beautiful Bill” by former President Trump. The facility will operate under the 287(g) program, which fosters cooperation between ICE and local law enforcement agencies assisting in immigrant apprehension and deportation efforts.
