President Donald Trump vowed that Washington, D.C., will soon become “one of the safest” cities in the world, unveiling a new initiative to address violent crime in the capital. In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump announced a White House press conference scheduled for Monday to detail his anti-crime strategy. He claimed that D.C. has become “one of the most dangerous” cities globally, but promised that change is coming.
The announcement came shortly after Trump ordered an increased presence of federal law enforcement in the District. According to the White House, the weeklong initiative—potentially extendable—includes support from multiple federal agencies such as the U.S. Capitol Police, DEA, U.S. Marshals, ATF, and Homeland Security Investigations. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the deployment is aimed at protecting “innocent citizens” amid rising violent crime.
Trump has repeatedly criticized crime in Washington and suggested the federal government may need to take over. As an example, he cited the recent violent mugging of a Department of Government Efficiency staffer, blaming the incident on youth gangs. Trump called for changes in D.C. law to allow 14-year-olds and older to be prosecuted as adults for serious offenses.
“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, we will have no choice but to take Federal control,” Trump said. Vice President J.D. Vance supported the idea, attributing the city’s crime problems to “misguided local leadership.”
Earlier this year, Trump established a task force to enforce quality-of-life laws and crack down on crime in public spaces. However, fully federalizing D.C. would require Congress to repeal the 1973 Home Rule Act—a challenging prospect in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
