Dash cam footage has surfaced showing the chaotic May arrest of William “Mullins” McLeod, a leading Democratic candidate for South Carolina governor. The 53-year-old attorney was found in downtown Charleston wearing only underwear and shoes, shouting loudly, and claiming to be “God” and “Superman.” Police reported that McLeod exhibited behavior consistent with someone under the influence of a stimulant.
In the hour-long video, McLeod refuses to identify himself and instead makes bizarre and aggressive statements. He references his campaign and threatens to “kick” an opponent’s “f—king teeth in,” seemingly directed at Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson, also a gubernatorial candidate. He also used racial slurs and resisted arrest, later refusing to exit the patrol car, saying, “It’s time to go to bed.”
McLeod is facing misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges. A police report noted his bloodshot eyes and dilated pupils but did not confirm any substance use. He was eventually booked into jail around 1 a.m. following his arrest.
The South Carolina Democratic Party has called on McLeod to drop out of the race. Party Chair Christale Spain said McLeod appears to be facing serious personal challenges and should focus on his well-being rather than continuing his campaign.
McLeod, who previously ran for governor in 2010, has not commented publicly since the video’s release. However, he described the arrest as “unlawful” during his campaign launch and asked voters to wait for the full story before judging him, claiming his arrest underscores why he should be elected governor.
