President Donald Trump reiterated that the U.S. “needs” Greenland for national security, suggesting that American troops may be deployed to take control of the island.
During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump emphasized the importance of Greenland for security, referencing existing U.S. military bases there, such as Pituffik Space Base.
Despite Trump’s comments, Rutte declined to get involved in the discussion, leaving the matter outside NATO’s scope.
Greenland’s citizens, however, rejected Trump’s desire for annexation, with the majority voting for parties opposing American control. Greenlanders, seeking independence from Denmark, aim to build their own future and strengthen their sovereignty, despite the island’s strategic and resource-rich appeal to the U.S.
