Following a tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis that left two children dead and 17 others injured, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz addressed the public in a somber press conference. The Democratic governor expressed sorrow over the heartbreaking loss and emphasized unity, community, and resilience in the face of tragedy.
Walz praised the school’s mission rooted in Catholic values and lamented how a place meant for learning and service had been overtaken by “evil and horror and death.” He extended heartfelt condolences to the families, acknowledging that “no words” could ease their pain.
Walz also thanked law enforcement and emergency personnel, including the Minneapolis Police, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, FBI, and first responders at local hospitals, particularly Hennepin County Medical Center where many of the wounded children received life-saving care.
Notably, Walz offered gratitude to federal officials, including President Donald Trump, who called to express condolences and offer federal support. “Receiving a call from President Trump, who was with his leadership team… expressing their deep condolences… was appreciated,” Walz said, marking a rare bipartisan moment.
The governor urged the nation not only to offer prayers but also to take meaningful action to prevent future tragedies. “It’s Minnesota’s day today,” he said, “and it’s my strongest desire that no state, no community, no school ever experiences a day like this.” Walz concluded by calling for unity and compassion, stating, “Everybody across the country today is part of the Annunciation Parish, and they’re with those families.”
