Mississippi News Anchor Celeste Wilson Dies Suddenly at 42
Celeste Wilson, a weekend news anchor at WAPT in Jackson, Mississippi, has died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 42, according to NBC’s Today show. Wilson had only recently joined the station but was already being recognized for her professionalism, warmth, and dedication to journalism.
WAPT anchors Troy Johnson and Megan West announced her passing on air. “Celeste had only been with us for a short time, but we were already touched by her professionalism, her warmth and her dedication to the work of journalism,” West said. The loss stunned the newsroom and viewers alike.
Peter Keith, WAPT’s president and general manager, praised Wilson’s impact in a short time. “She brought warmth and high standards, elevating not just stories but the people around her,” he said. “She believed journalism is service — showing up, asking fair questions, and giving voice to those too often unheard.”
Wilson appeared in good health during her final news segment on August 25, where she interviewed Rep. Bennie Thompson. Just days earlier, she was seen smiling at the Girl Scouts of Mississippi Women of Distinction Induction breakfast, where she had been conducting interviews and engaging with the community.
A Louisiana native, Wilson began her career at a CBS affiliate in Monroe before earning a master’s degree at Arizona State University. She also worked for outlets including PBS. WAPT said, “All of us here… are heartbroken by this sudden loss,” as tributes poured in from across the journalism world.
