Former Vice President Kamala Harris is now under protection from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) after President Donald Trump revoked her Secret Service detail as of September 1. According to a FOX 11 report, up to 14 officers from LAPD’s elite Metro Division have been reassigned to provide security at Harris’ Brentwood residence. She has lived there with her husband, Doug Emhoff, since leaving Washington following her defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
While former vice presidents typically receive six months of protection after leaving office, President Joe Biden had extended Harris’ coverage to a full year. Trump reversed that extension, prompting strong criticism from Democratic leaders. LA Mayor Karen Bass called the decision an act of political revenge. The California Highway Patrol has also offered to provide security, though this requires approval from Governor Gavin Newsom. A spokesperson for Newsom emphasized that public safety should not be subject to “vindictive political impulses.”
President Trump has also revoked taxpayer-funded protection for several other high-profile figures, including Hunter Biden, Dr. Anthony Fauci, former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and former national security officials John Bolton and Mike Pompeo. Critics argue this reflects a broader pattern of political retaliation within the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris is reportedly considering her next political move. While she has ruled out running for California governor, speculation continues around a potential 2028 presidential campaign. However, Democratic strategist James Carville recently stated that the party wants to move on from 2024-era figures like Harris.
Other Democrats expected to enter the 2028 race include California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. With growing internal divisions and uncertain leadership, the Democratic Party’s future direction remains unclear in the aftermath of the 2024 election.
