Charlie Kirk Shot During Speaking Event at Utah Valley University
Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was shot Wednesday afternoon while speaking at Utah Valley University. A spokesperson confirmed, “Charlie Kirk has been shot… Condition unknown.” The incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. as Kirk addressed a crowd under a white pop-up tent. Video footage captured the moment, showing a loud pop, followed by panic as attendees shouted, “Run, run, run!”
Ellen Treanor, a university spokesperson, stated that the gunshot came from a building approximately 200 yards away. “To the best of our knowledge, the individual was hit and was taken away immediately by his security personnel,” she told Fox News. The campus was placed on lockdown, and authorities later confirmed that a suspect was in custody.
Just moments before the shooting, Kirk had been answering a question about transgender mass shooters in America. In video footage, he is heard responding, “Too many,” before being interrupted by gunfire. The timing of the question and the subsequent attack is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Condemnation and prayers poured in from across the political spectrum. President Trump called the shooting “horrifying” and asked Americans to pray for Kirk. Vice President J.D. Vance and Utah Senator Mike Lee echoed similar sentiments. Democratic governors, including Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, Gretchen Whitmer, and Wes Moore, strongly denounced the violence.
“Political violence has no place in our country,” Shapiro wrote. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also called for unity and calm, saying the day’s events were “deeply disturbing.” This is a developing story. More details will be released as the investigation continues.
