FBI Director Kash Patel announced Friday that over 11,000 tips helped lead to the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who is accused of fatally shooting conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Kirk was speaking at a Turning Point USA event when a single shot struck him in the neck, killing him. Surveillance video and digital communications played a key role in identifying the suspect.
Robinson was reportedly chatting with a roommate via Discord about retrieving the gun he left behind and discussing details about a Mauser 30.06 rifle believed to be the murder weapon. FBI officials also discovered messages between Robinson and another unnamed individual, discussing where to stash the gun and what clothes he wore during the shooting. Bullet casings found at the scene were marked with provocative messages like “Hey Fascist! Catch!” and “Bella Ciao.”
Authorities said Robinson was seen arriving at the campus in a gray Dodge Challenger. After the FBI released surveillance images, Robinson’s father recognized him and, with help from a family pastor, convinced him to surrender to law enforcement. Former President Donald Trump later confirmed during a Fox News appearance that a family member had turned Robinson in.
According to family members, Robinson had become “more political” in recent years and had expressed strong disdain for Kirk prior to the shooting. Reports indicate that Kirk’s visit to the campus had been discussed at a recent family gathering, with Robinson voicing opposition to his presence.
The fatal shot is believed to have been fired from a rooftop approximately 200 yards away. Investigators later recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle along the suspected escape route. Forensic evidence—including a palm print, a forearm impression, and a footprint—further helped authorities build a case against Robinson.
